How do you wash massage towels and get them soft, odorless and more absorbent again?

You bought new towels or fitted sheets to stretch over your massage table? After using it a few times, sheets and massage towels may start to feel rough or spread unpleasant odors. Over time, they will no longer smell fresh and retain moisture, causing towels to absorb less. Because moisture is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, there is a risk that bacteria will attach themselves more easily to the damp textiles. How can you prevent this?

• Make sure you dry the sheets and towels immediately after washing, preferably in a dryer at a high temperature. Never use towels or sheets in your massage parlor that are still damp.
• During a wash in the washing machine, use white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda or baking soda.

White vinegar and sodium bicarbonate or baking soda

This is what you need for a wash:

• 1 cup white vinegar (250 ml) or distilled vinegar
• Half a cup of baking soda (also called sodium bicarbonate or baking soda): 125 mg
• Hot water

Dirty towels and sheets that no longer smell so fresh can be treated in the washing machine. Dissolve a cup of white vinegar in some water and put it in the drum of your washing machine. Let the washing machine run through the full cycle. It’s very simple!

Then run the wash program again with hot water, but now add the baking soda, sodium bicarbonate. It is important that you do not mix the two ingredients, vinegar and sodium bicarbonate together.

Hang the massage towels to dry after this wash and immediately notice the difference when you start using the towels again.

How can this be explained that your towels are getting softer and smell fresh?

Science can explain these simple, natural tips. Commercial talk and advertisements make us believe that the recommended washing products and fabric softeners give an optimal result. However, the opposite is true. Too many added fragrances, dyes and chemicals damage the textiles, it accumulates the detergent in the textile, making the fibers rougher and the towel will no longer be able to absorb water.

• White vinegar contains acetic acid, which has the property of removing bacteria and moisture from the towels. The musty smell disappears and the textile feels soft and pleasant again.
• Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda is an ideal product that can be used for many cleaning jobs in and around the house. It disinfects, removes dirt residues and grease and neutralizes bad odors. The alkaline property of baking soda is much higher than that of most detergents, so this simple, white powder also cleans and deodorizes much better. Baking soda is called bicarbonate in chemistry (sodium). In the body, bicarbonate plays an important role in deacidifying. It also has a function in keeping the pH constant in the blood, among other things. Our pancreas produces enormous amounts of bicarbonate to neutralize the acidic environment in the small intestine. When bicarbonate comes into contact with acid, the liquid bubbles because CO2 is released.
