What is the wisdom of the heart?
‘The wisdom of the empty heart.‘ Can a heart contain wisdom? Wisdom and knowledge is something of the mind. A mental thing? And the heart, as the physician knows it, is only a natural organ, which has a pumping function to pump blood throughout the body. Your heartbeat does not bring about wisdom. Have you ever noticed that wisdom emerges from your heartbeat? Has a doctor ever discovered wisdom while checking your heartbeat through his stethoscope?
And yet… From scientific research in the field of neurocardiology, it is becoming increasingly clear that the heart is a very central organ with many more properties than just a pumping function:
- The heart has its own network of several tens of thousands of neurons, 40,000 cells that are equal to those of our brain. So there is a ‘little brain‘ in our hearts! These neural cells are constantly sending information to your brain. Your brain uses these signals from the heart to act or not to act, to make choices. So the heart controls the brain, instead of the other way around… Maybe it is the place where wisdom resides?
- The heart produces hormones such as adrenaline, ANF (which regulates blood pressure) and oxytocin.
- The heart has an electromagnetic field many times stronger than that of the brain.
But when we talk about the wisdom of the heart, we are talking about something else. Throwing everything that is in the mind overboard. Only then does the no-mind itself become your heart. It’s not something physiological. It is your no-mind, which knows no prejudice, no knowledge, no content. Just purity, simple silence – and no-mind can be called an empty heart. It’s just a matter of how you express it; You can choose what you want to call it: the wisdom of the empty heart or the wisdom of no-mind, both mean the same thing. It’s about letting go of thoughts and emotions, and reaching a state of pure emptiness and awareness. That’s what this module of heartfulness is about.
From the brain to the heart
Since most people live from the mind, the question now is how can we let go of the mind and sink into the heart? There are all kinds of techniques for this, which have already been discussed in the other modules of heartfulness. In “the wisdom of the heart” you will be introduced to different meditation techniques that help you get out of the mind and into the heart. The methodologies come from different spiritual traditions as well as from recent discoveries from a scientific angle.
Can thoughts change the world?
"The flow of knowledge ripples towards a non-mechanical reality; The universe is starting to look more and more like a big thought, not a big machine. The mind no longer seems to be an unintentional intruder into the world of matter. We should worship the spirit as the creator and governor of matter. Resign yourself to it, accept the indisputable conclusion. The universe is immaterial-mental and spiritual."
R.C. Henry, Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University"
Since in this module we experience and view heartfulness from the North of the wheel (see what is Centering) it is also the place to look at the power of thoughts and whether e.g. thoughts can exert influence during a meditation or visualization exercise.
And because science is one of the quality of the North, we also look at scientific research to determine what the power of thoughts is. Perhaps the era we are in now is an important turning point for research into consciousness. Every year, great scientists are added, each with intriguing research. In summary, according to several studies, there is a good chance that, under the right conditions, we can change our genes and DNA with our thoughts and intentions.
